横山大観 Yokoyama Taikan

「阿やめ」 Irises

1901年 216×83 cm

大観には珍しい美人画の大作。古い箱書きは「水鏡」となっており、これは物の真の姿を写しだす水面を意味する言葉である。 A large piece of a portrait of a beauty, which is an uncommon motif for Taikan. The old box inscription reads: "Suikyō", which is a word that means a water surface that can reflect the true form of objects.

大観と建築大観は中学の時、建築家の夢を抱いていた。
勉強に励み東京府中学校（現・都立日比谷高校）を明治18年に優秀な成績で卒業し、東京大学予備門と同付属英語学校を受験した。
だが、この年から掛け持ち受験が禁止されていたため、大観はせっかく合格していた英語学校の資格を取り消されてしまう。

そこで、建築家の道を断念した。

そんな大観は自身の邸宅を選地、設計指導した。電灯や欄間のデザインが部屋ごとに違っており、大観のセンスの良さを感じる。
平成29年（2017年）２月９日、横山大観旧宅及び庭園は、国の史跡及び名称に指定された。
